About this Audiobook

This audiobook shares the incredible adventures and adversity of America's the last authentic overnight paddlewheeler, the steamboat "Delta Queen." Discover the remarkable story of her 82-year cruising career. This boat and the extraordinary characters of her career have a dramatic tale to tell. It was built in a lavish grandeur of the 1920s. The Delta Queen is the result of a larger-than-life construction project, expenses near $1 million provided gloriously lavish splendor. A hull fabricated in Scotland. A gigantic steam-powered paddlewheel. An interior featuring exotic woodwork, elaborate brass railings, a Titanic-style grand staircase, and stained-glass windows. This is a star, ready for the drama of her life.

And her bizarrely diverse career: First as an overnight ferryboat on the Sacramento River in California. Then as a US Navy Vessel during WWII. Auctioned off. Then towed through the Panama Canal to the Mississippi. A fresh makeover. Another 60-year career as the last of the legendary steamboat cruises. Millions traveled on her. She was the last great river symbol harkening back to the era of Mark Twain. And then Congress got involved. You can imagine how that went. She dodged miss-aimed legislation for decades until an unrenewed exemption forced into retirement in 2008. She was briefly operated as a bed and breakfast in Chattanooga, TN.

BREAKING NEWS: In November of 2018, legislation was passed which allows the Delta Queen a chance to once again cruise America' s rivers. The vessel's owners hope to oversee renovations and return the Delta Queen to cruising America's rivers. Perhaps there is another chapter yet to come!
