I am pleased to share my fascination for the amazing struggles to control the Ohio and Mississippi River systems during the American Civil War.

From the beginning of the American Civil War, leaders on both sides recognized the importance of controlling the Ohio and Mississippi River systems. These waterways provided transportation arteries for the transport of troops and supplies. But the rivers also provided the Union with routes of invasion. Iron-covered and cannon-equipped steamboats operated like floating tanks and dramatically impacted the outcome of these efforts. The story is filled with incredible characters, including one whose actions along the river helped thrust him into the White House. Plus, the important decision of a pivotal river-border state to refuse to side with either the Union or the Confederacy. These fascinating people and their struggles impacted the outcome of the war.
